Exercising has a variety of benefits that improve the health and well-being of an individual. For men, exercise can improve sexual health and lower the risk of issues such as erectile dysfunction.
It can be hard to get motivated to exercise, even knowing the array of health benefits regular exercise can bring to a person. But what if exercise could positively affect your sex life? Would you exercise then?
Studies show that regular exercise can improve male sexual health now and later in life. So, why not get started? Thirty minutes of regular exercise 4 times a week is all you need to have a dramatic impact on your life. The benefits include better health, better sex, and longevity.
When we talk about male sexual health, erectile dysfunction is bound to come up. It’s a common issue that men face, but exercise can have a dramatic effect on improving male sexual health. Because ED is commonly linked to cardiovascular issues, regular exercise works to increase blood flow in the body. Healthy blood flow positively impacts the quality and consistency of a man’s erection.
Studies show that regular aerobic exercise can help men better manage ED symptoms. Including pelvic floor exercises into a routine can also help men improve erectile function.
So, exactly how much should you exercise to treat erectile dysfunction? According to the Journal of Sexual Medicine, men who exercised 18 MET (metabolic equivalents) or more a week had notably better sexual function than men who were inactive. Eighteen MET in terms of exercise is about 2 hours of strenuous activity such as running, 3 hours of moderate activity such as hiking, or 6 hours of light activity such as walking.
Unfortunately, over 180,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year. It’s important for men to realize the likelihood of developing prostate cancer so that they can take measures to find the cancer early or prevent it. One prevention method is exercise. Exercise is linked to lowering an individual’s risk for prostate cancer.
We often think of the visible side effects of regular exercise like maintaining a healthy weight or staying physically fit. However, a study out of the American Association for Cancer Research looked at the benefits of exercise on an internal basis. They found that men who had a history of walking and regularly walked at a moderate pace had more normal looking blood vessels within a prostatic tumor. All of the men in the study underwent prostate cancer surgery, and the men that exhibited small and irregular blood vessels were less physically active.
It’s thought that the normality of the blood vessels in the active men works to restrict cancerous growth and also reduces the possibility of dying from prostate cancer.
