SculpSure Treatment FAQs: Frequently Asked Questions
What is SculpSure?
SculpSure is a non-invasive, FDA-approved, laser-based body contouring treatment that helps patients achieve a natural-looking, slimmer appearance quickly and effectively without undergoing surgery. Patients commonly refer to SculpSure as a “lunch hour laser liposuction” treatment.
How long is the SculpSure treatment?
The entire process only takes about 25 minutes per session.
Is SculpSure FDA approved?
Yes. SculpSure is the world’s first FDA-approved laser treatment for non-invasive lipolysis (the breakdown of fats and other lipids by hydrolysis to release fatty acids).
In 2015, the FDA cleared SculpSure for its use on the upper/lower abdominal areas and the flanks (commonly known as the “love handles”).
In 2017, SculpSure was approved by the FDA for use on the inner and outer thighs, as well as the back and chin.
Is SculpSure the same thing as “coolsculpting”?
Not exactly. While both CoolSculpting and SculpSure are non-invasive techniques for targeting unwanted fat, they use completely opposite approaches. Instead of freezing fatty tissue, SculpSure harnesses the power of heat to eliminate unwanted bulges.
How soon will I see results?
The first visible signs of fat reduction can often be observed as early as 6 weeks after the initial treatment. Typically though, the best results will be seen 12 weeks post treatment.
How does SculpSure work?
How SculpSure differs from other lipolysis devices on the market is the way it uniquely targets fat cells, specifically using a laser-based process that passes heat through the dermis (outer layer of skin) to “melt” off fat. This fatty tissue is then naturally absorbed and eliminated by the body.
When you arrive at the Alarcon Urology Center for your SculpSure treatment, a friendly practitioner will have you sit in a relaxed, reclined position and mark the areas of your body to be targeted. The SculpSure device will then be wrapped around you like a belt.
During the treatment, an applicator, which essentially looks like a fancy vacuum hose, transmits heat via a diode laser. This heat energy is then absorbed by fatty tissue and kills fat cells under the skin. The device shifts between hot and cold cycles as it burns fat while also ensuring a safe temperature for your skin.
Is SculpSure permanent?
Yes. You are born with a specific amount of fat cells in your body, which remains the same throughout your adult life. When you “lose weight” through diet or exercise, what this really means is your fat cells are shrinking. SculpSure, however, eliminates fat cells permanently so that they will never return.
That said, while new fat cells cannot grow back once they’ve been eliminated, the fat cells that do remain can become enlarged and eclipse the results achieved through SculpSure if you don’t maintain a healthy lifestyle. For this reason, diet and exercise are strongly encouraged.
How much does SculpSure treatment cost?
The price of SculpSure depends on the number of applicators used during your treatment, what parts of the body you want to target, where you live and how many treatment sessions you do. The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) estimates that the average cost of a nonsurgical fat reduction treatment like SculpSure was about $1,500 in 2016.
SculpSure is considered a cosmetic procedure, so it’s usually not covered by insurance. However, some doctors offer incentives and payment plans, so be sure to ask.
Who is a candidate for SculpSure?
SculpSure is a popular option for all kinds of people because it helps eliminate unwanted fat for both men and women, and is effective on a wide range of body types.
However, it’s important to note that Sculpsure should not be viewed as a weight loss solution and is only recommended as an alternative treatment of stubborn pockets of fat that don’t go away with diet and exercise. SculpSure is best suited for people with a body mass index of 30 or less, and it’s not intended to treat obesity.
As always, it’s important to talk to a board-certified doctor or medical professional about whether SculpSure is right for you.
Are there any side-effects associated with SculpSure?
One of the biggest perks of the SculpSure treatment is that it’s non-invasive, meaning there’s no downtime and minimal risks. Despite the use of heat, the SculpSure treatment is designed to be safe for your skin by running a cooling cycle to maintain a safe and comfortable temperature on the body. Also, while the laser is hot enough to kill fat cells, it leaves other body tissue intact.
After a treatment, you might expect some light bruising, swelling, or soreness. The patch of skin that was in contact with the pads might be a little red and tender to the touch, but you should be able to go about your normal day when finished with the treatment.
